Almost every region has legends of evil shields created by either demons or hubristic warlocks or technomancers. The shield, usually a blood-red jewel in a pendant, although it generally tends to resemble whatever fashion nobles' shields are worn in. They provide complete invulnerability but demand a tithe of blood spilled in hatred, and steal their wearer's souls, turning them into creatures of pure evil and malice. The only way to defeat them is to drown them in so much angry blood that the evil charm is satisfied and departs. Thus, peasants will slaughter animals as offerings to the Skuulwyrds, and throw the blood at the shield. Or (and this is of course where the myth started), attack again and again and die in droves.
